VISIT MALAYSIAN TRAVEL BLOG!!

If you say you've been to Kuala Lumpur city and you've taken a picture with the Petronas twin tower, walked on the streets of Bukit Bintang, ate a banana leaf meal in Brickfields Little India and viewed the Kuala Lumpur Skyline from the top of the KL Tower, yet you say you've not been to this place. I would say you've never seen the heart and soul of Kuala Lumpur city. You still don't know what place i am actually talking about, do you??

Well, today I am gonna talk all about "PS" known as PETALING STREET, Kuala Lumpur city's official Chinatown. Ask anyone who have visited Kuala Lumpur city and the first thing that pops out is either it's a rip off or they had a great experience there. Located in the middle of Kuala Lumpur's beating heart, along the Gombak river, behind the Victoria Institution next to the busy Pudu Raya station and a stone away from Pasar Seni is this interesting and historically significant street.


Petaling Street

  • It is the"Chinatown" located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • Infamous for pirated clothes, accesories and along with bootleg DVD's and CD's.
But at the same time Petaling Street does not exclusively offer pirated products.

  • Also, Petaling Street is known to be a tourist spot! Filled with people from various countries and not forgetting our very own Malaysian citizen as well.
  • Many teenagers usually call it their "lepak" spot.
  • This are has almost everything. From food stalls to accessory shops, clothing and etc.
  • Not only it has Chinese food but it also has Indian/Malay food all over the place.
History

  • Chinatown is centered on the "Market Square", Jalan Tun H.S. LEE or known as High Street.
  • It was popular for it was higher than the rest of the town, therefore it is less prone flood.
  • Wealthy population were inclined to build their shop houses over there. As a result, the shop houses were built north of Jalan Cheng Lok and near High Street business center. 
  • Around the start of 20th century, Kuala Lumpur was known to be the "pioneer" town.
  • Population around this area was largely male. The strong, rough and touch kind of males. 
  • Mainly it was those Cantonese and Hakka's who came to the city working as "coolies" in the mines.
  • Governed by a Chinese Kapitan/Leadman.
Development
Before the face lift.
  • In 2003, Petaling Street underwhen a major RM11 million face lift when to large Chinese arches to welcome visitors were places at the either ed of the street.
  • Green roof cover was constructed covering the whole street. dubbed the "Green Dragon".
  • It is now transformed into pedestrian shopping mall.

  • It is therefore the best place to shop for counterfeit branded products and trying it's large variety of Chinese cuisine.
Specialty
  • Malaysians first period Kung Fu comedy, "Petaling Street Warriors" , is set against the backdrop of Petaling Street in the year of 1908.
Features
  • There is a McDonald's located on the first shop lot of Petaling street, nearby a Chinese bookshop.
  • Local food stalls selling various of local delights and attraction know as "Central Market".



  • Famous landmark is the "Sri Mahamariamman Temple", located in Jalan Tun H.S.Lee. One of the oldest Hindu temple. 
                                   
  • There is a big Chinese temple as a landmark too.
                                     
  • The place is surrounded by various of hotels like Swiss Inn, Ancasa hotel and spa, Alamanda hotel.
  • Budget hotels are also available such as Hotel City and Hotel Chinatown.
Reviews

    • It's a convinient location, plenty of options for shopping.
    • Petaling street is the place to bargain and get the things you want but the moment the realize they realize you're a tourist, bargaining is usually a little too hard.
    • It's a good place to buy bags, shoes, accesories and clothes which though they're not authentic they're surely good quality
    • Too congested and jammed up area.
Ways to get there
  • From KL Sentral, you can take either a  Rapid KL bus, monorail or the LRT.
  • Get down at Pasar Seni LRT station of Kelana Jaya line and Maharajalela station for the monorail.
  • Any buses that passes through KL Sentral goes to the destination.
  • From KLCC best advice is to take the Putra Line and get to Pasar Seni.
  • Those coming from Mid Valley, it's better to travel by bus because there is only KTM and waiting for the KTM will take a long time.
  • Cab would be the last choice.
Cost
  • If you're taking the cab, the cost is unpredictable depending on the jam.
  • Bus from Mid Valley is RM 2.00 or most is RM 2.50.
  • Via monorail from KL Sentral to station Maharajalela per head is RM 1.60.
  • Via LRT from KL Sentral to station Pasar Seni per head is RM 1.00
  • From KLCC to Pasar Seni per head is RM 1.60
                                                   


Interesting dining place
  • Best hokkien mee is served at Restaurant Kim Lian Kee, Lian Bee. Located opposite of Hong Leong Bank if you're craving for the original charchoal stir-fried Hokkien Mee.
  • Chee Cheong Fun lovers head to Petaling Streets Chee Cheong Fun or Madras lane Chee Cheong Fun.
  • Roasted Duck at Sze Ngan Chye, a street stall. Located in the middle of Petaling Street.
  • Ikan Panggang Portugis Istimewa(Portuguese grilled fish) hidden in the walkway next to Hong Leong Bank.
  • For the best wantan noodles head to Koon Kee, Buried behig a cluster of street stalls, Koon Kee Restaurant offers arguably the best wantan mee in town. In operation since 1942, the restaurant is now run by the thrid generation.
  • Need to grab a drink and rest your feet, hit to the Reggae Bar.
